
Nine fishermen were saved from an ice floe, torn from the shore of Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal, Interfax reports.
Olkhon Island is the largest on Lake Baikal, its length is 73 km, this is a place popular among fishermen.
“Nine fishermen were removed from the drifting ice floe at 17:10 local time (12:10 Moscow time), rescuers on the Khivus air pillow vessel are now delivered to the Oguren village on the Baikal shore,” the head of the press service of the Ministry of Emergencies in the Irkutsk Region Andrei Shutov told the agency.
According to him, in the village the heating point is deployed on the basis of a local school, where the fishermen will be provided with hot food. The Mi-8 helicopter flew out in place. The representative of the Ministry of Emergencies also clarified that three cars are still on the ice floe, the issue of their evacuation is being resolved.
On Saturday morning, Lydin with nine fishermen and three cars came off the shore in the area of Cape Hoba on Olkhon.
