In Petrozavodsk, Oleg Fokin, Chairman of the City Council, was detained on charges of fraud. According to Vedomosti, the investigation considers it involved in the theft of more than 3.9 million rubles through fraud with VAT compensation. In November last year, Fokin was expelled from United Russia "for the repeated actions discrediting the party." This decision was associated with the fact that he refused to express distrust of the mayor of the city Galina Shirshina.
The head of Karelia, Alexander Khudilainen, called the arrest of Fokin "an emergency that discredits power in the region." "Fokin is not the only one who was detained for fraud by power structures lately," said Khudilain, suggesting not to look for political subtext in this matter.
Shirshina said that she had little information to talk about the reasons for the detention, but emphasized that she was embarrassing that the deputy head of the republic warned about her possible arrest: "Besides, the show was arranged from the detention, obviously this is an action intimidating the deputies." The mayor recalled that the deputies who support the administration were invited to the government of the republic last week, where, among other things, they discussed the issue of removing Fokin.
The leader of the local "Yabloko", with which Shirshin was elected, Vasily Popov is sure that Fokin prevented the governor from "getting to Shirshina." Popov remembered that there were already several unsuccessful attempts to re -elect the speaker, and the force action was held on the eve of the session of the City Council. Popov does not believe in Fokin's accusations: in his opinion, from the speaker they will try to pull out information against Shirshina and United Russia, Devletkhan Alikhanov.
