1945. Smiling "Wilhelm Gustloff"

70 years ago, on January 30, 1945, the S-13 submarine under the command of Captain 3rd rank Alexander Marinesco sunk in the Danzig Bay area the German passenger super-tiner "Wilhelm Gustloff", used as a military transport. Of the 10,582 people on board the liner, 9343 people were killed mainly by refugees from Pomerania. About 1000 passengers were military, including 373 girls from the auxiliary service of the fleet. Soviet allegations that there were 3,700 officers on board the ship, crews for 70-80 submarines, as well as overseers from concentration camps, are a myth. For the sinking of Gustloff, Marinesko was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and in 1990 he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
