Russia will strengthen nuclear weapons to protect sovereignty

The Ministry of Defense will focus on improving the qualitative state of strategic nuclear forces, building the combat composition of the army and navy and creating an aerospace forces, said the head of the military department Sergey Shoigu, Interfax reports .

He promised to fulfill the task set by President Vladimir Putin and "to prevent military superiority over Russia." Shoigu cited the words of the head of state, according to which Russia "does not intend to get involved in an expensive arms race," it is planned to "provide a reliable, guaranteed protection of sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests."

“For this, it is envisaged to fully implement the state weapons program and achieve by 2020 the established parameters according to modern samples of weapons and military equipment-70-100%,” Shoigu added.

He emphasized that the main efforts will focus on improving the qualitative state of strategic nuclear forces, "building combat compositions and the capabilities of the army and navy, as well as the creation of a new type of armed forces-aerospace forces."

The minister also said that adjustments were made to the Ministry of Activities in 2015, taking into account the decisions made to build up combat potential “in connection with the emerging military-political situation around Russia”.

In this regard, according to him, the “grouping of troops and forces in strategic directions” will be strengthened, as well as “the indicators of the equipment of the armed forces with modern weapons and military equipment, the course of the construction of military towns and military facilities and military facilities”.

The chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, in turn, said that in 2014, two American destroyers were deployed at the Spanish naval base, and two more such ships were deployed in 2015.

On December 26, 2014, the president signed the new edition of the military doctrine. In the part of the document describing external threats, the first paragraph is an increase in NATO power potential and “endowing it with global functions realized in violation of international law”. One of the internal threats was called "activity on the information impact on the population, primarily on young citizens of the country, which aims to undermine historical, spiritual and patriotic traditions in the field of protection of the Fatherland."
