Medvedev is asked to save the INION building

On the Internet there is a collection of signatures under the appeal to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev with a request to urgently decide to restore the building of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences (INION) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the preservation of the institute and the library in it.

INION RAS is the largest scientific information center in Russia in the field of social and humanities, its library has 14.2 million storage units. The building of the institute on the trade union street in Moscow caught fire on the evening of January 30. The fire covered 2000 sq.m, about 1000 sq.m. collapsed. roofs. The fire was able to extinguish on the night of February 1, after which the building was processed all day with water to prevent re -fire.

“A fire in the INION RAS building is a misfortune, even people who are far from science feel the scale of which. One of the most important scientific centers of the country was injured. The building is partially destroyed, which is considered an outstanding creation of the architect Belopolsky, ” the CHANGE.ORG website says.

Fearing the demolition of the injured building and the subsequent commercial development of the territory after the fire, the authors of the appeal say that "the only acceptable decision in this situation is the restoration of the INION RAS building and the preservation of the institute and the library in it."

At 11:00 Moscow time, on February 3, almost 5500 people signed an online pattern.

On Tuesday, February 2, the press service of the INION emergency headquarters told TASS that it was not planned to close the institute, its building may be restored. Dmitry Efremenko, deputy chief of the Extraordinary Headquarters, explained that the reconstruction will take years, and at this time INION employees will be located in other institutions.

According to the latest data, a fifth of library funds of the institute was lost in a fire. “We can state that we have lost 20%. Today, it is evaluated how much has died and how valuable what has died, ”said Russian President Vladimir Fortov on the air of the Russia-24 channel, Interfax reports.

Director of INION Yuri Pivovarov at a press conference in Moscow said that the biliotext catalog was not injured, the institute’s building and its library archives can be restored. “Everything is different there. In the wing where there was a fire - things are bad, but not all died. Another wing that goes to the trade union street has practically preserved, ” TASS quotes Pivovarov.
