State Duma deputies proposed to demand compensation for damage to the USSR from Germany. An assessment of the amount that they plan to present as obligations on reparations will be engaged in a specially created working group, Izvestia reports.
“In fact, Germany did not pay the USSR no reparations for destruction and atrocities during the Great Patriotic War. After the war, an agreement was concluded on the termination of the collection of reparations, with Germany, and all the more united Germany, there were no such agreements, which means that the issue was opened,” the LDPR deputy Mikhail Degtyarev said.
He recalled that Germany compensated for the damage to even those countries that did not take part in the Second World War. So, according to him, Israel, in the framework of "compensation for national socialist injustices" received over 60 billion euros. “It turns out that Germany paid compensation to six million victims of the Holocaust, but at the same time ignored 27 million killed Soviet people. I think that the total amount of reparations at current prices should be at least three to four trillions of the euro, which Germany must pay the successor of the USSR - Russia,” the parliamentarian emphasized.
Experts surveyed by the publication agree that although claims to Germany are justified, it is almost unrealistic to recover reparations 70 years after the end of the war.
At the end of January, the new Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, stated about the intention to make reparation claims against Germany. In Athens, this issue is seen as "historical duty, international, European duty to the Greek people, which is directly related to the memory of the Greeks."
In January 2013, Greece already presented Berlin with more than 160 billion euros for the actions of the Nazis in Greek territory during the Second World War. The German authorities then stated that they should not Athens after 115 million German marks (about 55.4 million euros) were paid under the 1960 agreement.
