Chairman of the State Duma subcommittee on water resources Georgy Karlov said that the lower house of parliament may accept a statement about the ecocide of Crimea by Ukraine due to the blocking of water flow through the North Crimean Canal, RIA Novosti reported on Monday, February 16 .

“We are going to raise the issue of ecocide in Crimea, deliberate harm to the environment and human life, to the all-Russian parliamentary level. Ukraine’s actions to block the North Crimean Canal can be regarded as ecocide,” he said at an off-site meeting of the subcommittee. Karlov noted that the subcommittee is going to first initiate consideration of this issue at the State Duma, and then at the international community.

Through the North Crimean Canal running from the Dnieper, Ukraine provided up to 85% of Crimea’s needs for fresh water, which was used mainly for agricultural needs. After the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the water supply to the peninsula through the canal stopped. In May, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that the water supply problem had been partially solved thanks to the transfer of water into the canal from the Crimean river Biyuk-Karasu. for these purposes . were spent 5.5 million rubles

On Monday, February 16, the director of the department of state policy and regulation in the field of water resources of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Dmitry Kirillov , said that about 6 billion rubles will be allocated to solve the water problems of Crimea in 2015. In total, within the framework of the federal target program for the development of Crimea until 2020, about 60 billion rubles will be allocated for these purposes.
