1945. The death of General Karbyshev

70 years ago, on February 18, 1945, in the concentration camp of Mauthausen in Austria, Lieutenant General of Engineering Troops Dmitry Mikhailovich Karbyshev, one of the leaders of the camp underground, was killed.

The Canadian Army Major Sedon de Saint-Claire recalled: “In January 1945, among the 1000 people from the prisoners from the Haminkel plant, I was sent to the Mauthausen destruction camp, Lieutenant Karbyshev General and several other Soviet officers were in this team. Upon arrival in Mauthausen, they stayed in the cold all day. In the evening, for all 1000 people, a cold shower was arranged, and after that, they built on the parade ground in some shirts and blocks and kept until 6 a.m. Of the 1000 people who arrived in Mauthausen, 480 people died. General Dmitry Karbyshev also died. ”

Posthumously General Karbyshev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
