Amnesty International called on the permanent members of the UN Security Council to abandon the veto right

The international human rights organization Amnesty International called on five permanent members of the UN Security Council to abandon the veto in situations of genocide and other mass atrocities. This was reported by "Vedomosti" with reference to the Secretary General of the organization Salila Schetti.

"Having abandoned the right of the veto, five permanent members of the Security Council will provide the UN with great freedom of action regarding the protection of the civilian population if people are in serious danger," the human rights activist explained. Amnesty International also calls on all states, including the USA, China, Canada, India, Israel and Russia, ratify the weapon trade agreement or join it and comply with its conditions

In the final report of Amnesty International, it is noted for 2014 that last year the number of armed conflicts increased in the world, but also their character began to change. Armed groups become one of its parties, which in occupied territories begin to play the role of quasi -state. Human rights activists include ISIS, Boko-Haram, Al-Shabab, as well as the DPR and the LPR.

“No one came up with what to do with them - the countries are trying to act as military means, but not yet too successful, and the groups continue to attack the civilian population,” said Anna Neistat, senior director of Amnesty International.

The report also notes that in the states of the former USSR a threat to human rights is growing. More than a million civilians became forced immigrants, and thousands of people were killed during the conflict in Ukraine, where both sides violated the laws of war, conducting an indignant shelling and using the territory of residential areas for the offensive.

The humanitarian situation in the east of Ukraine will deteriorate, and economic difficulties in Russia and the deterioration of relations with the West will cause even more escalation of the situation about dissent and the attack on civil society will continue, the threat of repressions will grow, predicts Amnesty International.

Among the main violations of human rights in Russia, human rights activists note the restriction of freedom of expression, since the government tightened control of the media, in particular, sites such as “daily journal”, “brances” and Kasparov.ru were blocked, some media outlets received warnings about extremist or other illegal content of materials. Attacks on journalists also continued.

The authors of the report note that the remaining participants in the "Swamp case" were prosecuted, fines and criminal liability for multiple violations of the Law on Meetings and rallies were introduced. Cases of torture and cruelty by law enforcement agencies were recorded again. In anticipation of the Olympiad, employees of the Ecological Watch in the North Caucasus were persecuted, who attracted attention to environmental damage, two of them - Evgeny Vitishko and Igor Kharchenko - were arrested on fabricated charges.
