Insurance companies are experiencing the consequences of the crisis: the range of tariffs for comprehensive insurance has increased, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy insurance without a deductible. These are the results of a study of prices for comprehensive insurance policies conducted by RBC.

Last year, motor vehicle insurance, according to the Uralsib insurance group, increased in price by an average of 40%. There are several reasons for rising prices. The devaluation of the ruble led to an increase in the cost of repairs - prices for spare parts for foreign cars increased. In addition, insurers have been hit by rising legal costs. Since mid-2013, clients of insurance companies have been protected by the Law “On the Protection of Consumer Rights”. This has led to a significant increase in the number of lawsuits, especially in auto insurance, and the courts in these disputes most often side with clients.

As a result, insurance rates for different vehicles can vary greatly from company to company. RBC analyzed the cost of auto hull insurance policies for the most popular cars in Moscow (see table on page 20) to understand where it is best to insure today.

It turned out that the spread of tariffs is so wide that the cost of the policy can now influence the decision to buy a particular car. For example, the average insurance rate for a Mitsubishi Lancer is 24.4% of the insured amount, and a Nissan Qashqai is 9.3%. In addition, a third of the companies surveyed by RBC introduced a mandatory deductible (part of the losses paid by the car owner). And it is becoming increasingly difficult to insure a car without a deductible.

Expensive and cheap

To estimate the cost of comprehensive insurance in various companies, we selected the 10 most popular cars in Moscow, according to the Avtostat agency. We then estimated the cost of the policy from the 15 largest insurance companies for this type of insurance. The cost of the policy was estimated for a 2012 car driven by a 35-year-old man (for more details, see “What We Believed”).

The highest average full comprehensive insurance tariff for cars analyzed by RBC was IC Soglasie - 17.1%. For example, for Renault Logan insurance in this company you will have to pay 62.1 thousand rubles, and for a Mitsubishi Lancer - 223 thousand rubles. Dmitry Kuznetsov, director of the underwriting and product management department of the Soglasie insurance company, explains the high tariff by the unprofitability of the used vehicle segment. “The main reason for this is that there are many more fraudulent activities on used cars than on new vehicles,” he said, adding that the 2012 model year segment is not a priority for the company's growth.

“RESO-Garantiya” turned out to be the most inexpensive for car owners. This company has the lowest average tariff - 11.5%. For a Renault Logan comprehensive insurance they are asking 46.8 thousand rubles, for a Mitsubishi Lancer - 106.2 thousand rubles. “The company pays special attention to working with repair stations, because the cost of repairs is directly related to the cost of the comprehensive insurance policy. Negotiations are underway with each station on individual terms of cooperation,” explains Deputy General Director of RESO-Garantia Elena Zlygoreva.

By the way, as a result of a study, RBC found out that Uralsib Insurance Company does not insure three-year-old cars under comprehensive insurance at all. “We have temporarily limited the sale of policies for used cars, primarily models with a high level of fraud,” said Maria Barsova, head of the motor and property insurance department at Uralsib SG.

Franchise is a must

A third of the companies studied by RBC introduced a mandatory franchise for the most popular cars (2012 model year). In SOGAZ, AlfaStrakhovanie, Ingosstrakh and Ergo Rus, it is not possible to insure a three-year-old popular car without a franchise. Each company has its own minimum mandatory franchise amount - 3% of the insured amount in SOGAZ, 10 thousand rubles. in Ingosstrakh and up to 15 thousand rubles. at AlfaStrakhovanie and Ergo.

In February, AlfaStrakhovanie introduced a franchise for insuring all used cars. It allows you to get a discount of up to 50% on the tariffs that the company previously offered for full comprehensive insurance, says Ilya Grigoriev, head of the company’s underwriting department. “Moreover, the franchise does not apply if our client was not the culprit of the accident,” he adds.

Ergo introduced a mandatory franchise last year for cars costing less than 750 thousand rubles. or over five years of age. “Unfortunately, this segment, as our statistics show, is characterized by the largest number of insurance cases,” says Natalya Shcherban, director of the motor insurance department of the Moscow directorate of Ergo.

In SOGAZ, out of ten cars, Ford Focus, Hyundai Solaris, Renault Logan and Kia Rio will have to be insured with a mandatory deductible (3% of the cost). According to statistics, their owners most often get into accidents, Damir Aksyanov, deputy chairman of the board of SOGAZ, told RBC.

Representatives of other companies also told RBC that they have mandatory franchises for certain categories of clients. For example, the Renaissance Insurance Group introduced it for young and inexperienced drivers (under 24 years of age with less than three years of experience). “This is due to the high unprofitability of this segment - the cost of a comprehensive insurance policy without a franchise would be prohibitive for young car owners,” explains Sergei Demidov, managing director of the group’s motor vehicle insurance department. The same restriction applies to Ergo clients.

The introduction of a mandatory deductible for comprehensive insurance allows insurance companies to reduce costs when settling minor losses. They create the most problems for insurers due to administrative costs, payments to fraudsters and a sharp increase in litigation.

The deductible for comprehensive insurance will gradually become more widespread, Samiev is sure. Insurance companies are interested in this, as clients become more careful, and the clients themselves, for whom the cost of the service is reduced thanks to the deductible. Franchising is a practice that is common in European countries. Gradually, Russian clients will get used to it, and it will become the norm here too,” Samiev is sure. Previously, representatives of insurance companies told RBC that comprehensive insurance will rise in price in 2015 by an average of 20%.
