Metropolitan Tikhon of Novosibirsk and Berdsk, who called on the faithful to gather for a rally against the production of Tannhäuser at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, did not come to this action himself.
During a sermon on March 25, Tikhon spoke out "against the deeds of the lawless" who "for 30 pieces of silver" created a performance, and declared that those who did not come to the rally would join the "blasphemers and Christ-sellers."
According to various estimates, from one to two thousand people took part in the rally. Among them were activists of the National Liberation Movement and the People's Cathedral movement.
The main slogan of the rally was "Let's protect the shrines - save Russia." Its participants also unfurled posters "Let's protect the faith of Christ from desecration" and "Judas the fifth column, away from the Ministry of Culture."
State Duma deputy Nikolai Valuev spoke at the rally. “Probably, it’s not worth organizing a witch hunt now, but still there are always people who are the organizers of any action,” the deputy announced from the stage.
The participants began to come closer to the impromptu stage on the pedestal of the monument to Lenin. "Don't block my icons!" one of the older women shouted at her neighbor. She did not remain in debt, screaming in response.
