Torture of operatives of the Nizhny Novgorod center “E” reached the ECHR

The ECtHR communicated a complaint filed by lawyers of the “Committee against Torture” in the interests of Nikita Danishkin, who turned to human rights activists for legal assistance in 2011. Following this complaint, the European judges asked the Russian authorities a number of questions, in particular whether the applicant had been subjected to torture and whether the investigation carried out on his allegation had been effective. In the near future, Russia should send its comments on the case to the Strasbourg Court.

Nikita Danishkin applied to the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the "Committee against Torture" for legal assistance on February 1, 2011. According to the applicant, he was detained in the apartment he rented on December 25, 2010 by employees of the Center for Combating Extremism (CPE) and taken to the department. There, according to Nikita, he was beaten and tortured for several hours (including being tied with a tow rope in a “Turkish pose” and thrown on the floor), forcing him to confess to preparing a terrorist act and disseminating information that dishonored the honor and dignity of the employees of the Center “E” . Nikita stressed that the head of the CPE took part in his torture.
