Rosatom continues to develop its Asian activities. The state corporation is going to take part in the tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Malaysia, if it is announced.

Rosatom is ready to participate in the tender for the construction of a reactor in Malaysia. This was announced by Deputy General Director for Development and International Business of the state corporation Kirill Komarov. “Taking into account the fact that the Malaysian government in 2009 agreed on the creation of nuclear energy as one of the constituent types of production in the country’s energy balance from 2020, and despite the fact that the Russian Federation still does not have an intergovernmental agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear power signed with Malaysia energy for peaceful purposes, we are ready to take part in the tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in this country if it is announced,” Mr. Komarov told TASS .

The budget will be transferred to fast neutrons

Malaysia has the only research reactor, TRIGA, launched in 1982. Plans for full-scale construction of a nuclear power plant have not yet been implemented. By 2030, according to a report by the World Nuclear Association, the country plans to build three or four nuclear power plants, which will have to provide up to 15% of the country's electricity generation. It is expected that the appropriate legislative framework will be formed this year; the first nuclear power plant is planned to be put into operation in 2021.

As Kirill Komarov reported, Rosatom is ready to build reactors “in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, which have plans to develop nuclear energy.” This year, Rosatom plans to sign the first two contracts for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Vietnam, Ninh Thuan-1; in November 2014, it confirmed its interest in projects in Indonesia.

How Rosatom signed an agreement with Hungary

Rosatom signed a contract for the construction of two units with a total capacity of 2.4 GW at the Paks NPP with MVM Development of Paks II NPP (owned by the Hungarian State Asset Management), the Russian side announced in December 2014. The contract involves the use of Russian VVER reactors. Two more documents signed by Russia and Hungary provide for maintenance of nuclear power plants and the supply of nuclear fuel. According to the Hungarian government commissioner for the expansion of nuclear power plants, Attila Asodi, after construction, the power units will remain the property of Hungary, investments will not exceed €12.5 billion.
