In Uruguay, one of the most famous writers of Latin America Eduardo Galeano died

In the Montevideo hospital, one of the most famous writers of Uruguay and all of Latin America Eduardo Galeano died, the Russian BBC service reports.

The 74-year-old writer suffered from lung cancer.

Eduardo Galeano became known after the publication in 1971 of the book “The opened veins of Latin America”, which talks about the operation of the continent by Europe and the United States.

This book was banned in Uruguay, Chile and Argentina during the military dictatorships in these countries. The left writer and political activist himself were forced to emigrate to Spain, from where he returned to his homeland only in the 1980s.

In 2009, the book “The opened veins of Latin America” again became a bestseller after the President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez gave it to the US President Barack Obama.
