The court extended the arrest of the ex-Prime Minister of Kazakhstan

The court of the Kazybekbi district of Karaganda extended the term of detention under the house arrest of the former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Serik Akhmetov, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports with reference to the press service of the Supreme Court of the Republic.

According to the report, Akhmetov will remain under house arrest until 23:00 on May 18 of this year. Within the specified period, the ex-Prime Minister must complete the acquaintance with the materials of the case of assignment of property on an especially large amount, receipt of a bribe, illegal entrepreneurial activity and abuse of authority. The investigation estimated the damage caused by the actions of Akhmetov to the state in 1 billion tenge (about $ 5.4 million).

Recall that in September 2012, Serik Akhmetov became the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. After the resignation in April 2014, he was appointed Minister of Defense. Akhmetov headed the power department until October 22, 2014.

In November 2014, the court authorized Akhmetov’s house arrest on charges of corruption.
