A sunken radioactive aircraft carrier of the Second World War was found off the coast of California

A radioactive aircraft carrier of Independence (CVL-22 Independence) was found near the coast of California at a depth of about 800 meters. Scientists who examined the find with the help of a special underwater apparatus came to the conclusion that the ship on even keel was practically not damaged. This was reported on the website of the National Administration of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (Noaa) of the USA.

The aircraft carrier was flooded after nuclear tests held in 1946. Now, according to the representative of the American department, James Delgado, he "looks like ready to launch planes into the air." Independence was examined using an underwater apparatus on which a sonar issuing three -dimensional images was installed.

The ship participated in many large -scale operations of the Pacific Front, among which the battle in the Bay of Leita and the landing on Ivodzima. In 1946, he "survived" two atomic explosions. For the first time, he was far from the epicenter of the explosion and escaped the sinking. After the second explosion, the aircraft carrier received severe damage, as a result he was touched in San Francisco.

There, for four years, “Independence” tried to clean from radiation, but all the work ended with failures. As a result, the aircraft carrier was flooded in the area of ​​the pharallon islands off the coast of California. This happened in January 1951.
