Leonid Vladimir was born in Moscow in 1920 in the family of a doctor and an accountant. As he wrote in his autobiography , he began to draw, carried away by the collection of brands. The love of verses was later added to this hobby.

With the outbreak of war in 1941, he was drafted into the army, in engineering troops, having managed to graduate from three courses of the Moscow Engineering Institute (MISI). After the war, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Art of the Institute of Cinematographers (VGIK) at the multiplier department. His thesis was the first diaphylm in the history of VGIK, the creation of which gave the Vladimir “ticket to life”: he was invited to work as the chief artist for the Diafilm Studio, where he created a series of illustrations for 10 tapes.

After the release of the Buratino Adventures in the publishing house “Art” in 1956, Vladimirsky devoted himself entirely to illustrating books for children. The next widely known work of the artist was the illustrations for six fairy tale stories by A. Volkov, the first of which - the Wizard of the Emerald City - was published in 1959.

In an interview with the newspaper Culture, Vladimirsky admitted that the most interesting of all from the entire series of Volkov’s fairy tales was to illustrate the “Wizard of the Emerald City” and “Urfin Jus”.

“I did not want to part with my favorite heroes, and subsequently I myself wrote two fabulous novels about their adventures:“ Pinocchio is looking for a treasure ”and“ Pinocchio in an emerald city, ”the artist wrote about himself.
