Two veterans of the Second World War, residents of Petrozavodsk Nikolai Bakinov and Vladimir Damsov, appeared in the Karelia government and passed the anniversary medals handed over to the 70th anniversary of the victory over Germany. They explained their gesture with a protest against the reluctance of officials to demolish the Nevsky Passage shopping center, illegally attached to the house where veterans live.

The windows of the apartments of Bakinov and Dmetsov go straight to the roof of the Nevsky Passage, from which caustic pairs come. “In the summer, the roof heats up to 44 degrees,” said Bakinov. “The murderer is in the apartment. All the dirt from the roof enters the window, it is impossible to open the window: a stink, dirt. Rats run along the roof.”

“The wife is sick, not coming,” the veteran continued. “When there was no roof, she at least sit at the window, look at nature. Now we are in prison.”

Bakinov and Dmetsov have been demolishing the shopping center for five years. About 50 trials passed, including in the Supreme Court of Karelia. In addition, veterans complained to officials, wrote letters to the newspaper, held hunger strikes. According to Dmtsov, two years ago the head of Karelia, Alexander Khudilain, assured that he was taking the situation with the Nevsky Passage for personal control. Nevertheless, the shopping center is still working, and officials find more and more excuses for their inaction.

Together with the medals, Bakinov and Dmetsov handed over to the Government of the region an appeal addressed to Khudilinen, which explains the motives of their act. A copy of the appeal is addressed to Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, one of the government officials, while the veterans talked with journalists, called the police under the pretext of "doing a picket here." The arrived employees of the private security rewritten the data of the audience, but they did not delay anyone.
