The style in which Sergei Smirnov works is called "photographic Suprematism." The artist does not hide that his work is inspired by the work of the great Russian artist, avant-garde artist Casimir Malevich.

When I was still studying at school, ”says Sergey Smirnov,“ we were brought on an excursion to the Russian Museum, where I first saw a “black square”. My first reaction was bewilderment: I did not understand why this picture was in the museum. It took me 20 years to understand the genius of Casimir Malevich. ”
Now Smirnov’s works are exhibited in the same Russian Museum, not far from the hall where the Black Square is hanging - in December 2014 they were shown to visitors as part of the “third museum biennale of modern photography”.
Sergey Smirnov began his Suprematic experiments in painting. “I was going to write a picture of oil,” he admits, “but the more I looked at the sketch, the stronger I wanted to take a photo on this sketch.” So make -up artists and hairstyles were added to the co -authors to the photo artist, and Smirnov now says that everything he had taken used to only “preparation and search for their style”.
Smirnov is shooting real people - and by no means not only professional models: he is posed by both primary school teachers and colleagues in a photo studio, such as the administrator of Zoya Belonozhkin - “Woman with a Pipe”.
