"Here you go. You got caught. You're right, of course. But you can’t even imagine. Arrest him. I do not know the situation. Oh, I want it. What a disaster. He was right. I was wrong. And belching. It is difficult for me with this question. What the hell have I done? He killed them all, of course. "
This Shakespearean monologue ends the last episode of the documentary series “ The Jinx : The Life And Deaths of Robert Durst " . (In Russia, it is known as the Secrets of the billionaire.) On the day of release , more than a million viewers looked at him. Even for the HBO channel with his beating all the records of the Game of Thrones, this is a very big figure.
The other day, HBO launched a new documentary series - “Thoughtfulness. Case of kopa-love " ( " Thumbht Crimes : The CASE of The Cannibal COP ” ) - about a policeman who seemed to be going to kill his wife and eat, in any case, boasted by this on the Internet to the right and left. In addition, HBO is currently negotiating with the creators of the famous criminal audio poddy “TV series” - about turning it into a television series.
That is, the series "Secrets of the billionaire", whose hero was arrested before the final series, definitely set a new trend.
For the first time, I saw him at Times Square, standing in a car traffic on 42nd street. From a huge, five floors, the poster was warily watched by a thin, dry little man, like an elderly accountant suffering from indigestion. " The Jinx ” in translation -“ an evil eye, a person who brings misfortune. ” I was still surprised that the most expensive US advertising platform was occupied by a portrait of an unpleasant little man. Advertising on Times Square is too expensive for documentary cinema. Before the release of the last series, it was difficult to imagine what such an advertising noise was justified and what story would unfold around this series.
The man on the poster was Robert Darst, the eldest son of Simur Darst, President Durst Organization , which owns commercial real estate in New York. The state of the family is estimated at $ 4-5 billion.
Father prepared Robert for the role of the successor, but something did not grow together. Later, Robert's younger brother, Douglas, complained that he had an unpleasant habit of secretly urinating in his Douglas, an office basket for papers. When Robert helped in the basket of his uncle, his father was indignant. Because of this-or something else-Douglas advanced for the role of the crown prince. The relationship ultimately deteriorated that Douglas, who claimed that Robert was threatening to kill him repeatedly, achieved a court decision prohibiting his brother to approach him.
Having married, Robert settled with his wife Kathlin in a country cottage on the lake near New York. Katlin studied at Columbia University and often left for the city. According to common acquaintances, the life of the spouses was not perfect - Robert himself confirmed what reached his fight. And Darst kept in the cottage of the Siberian shepherd puppies - there were either six, or seven, and everyone called Igor. All Igori disappeared without a trace, one by one. Douglas Darst then said that his elder brother repeatedly threatened him to “be inhabited” ( to Igor ) . It is believed that on dogs he rehearsed the future murder of his wife.
© JIM McCormack / HBO Robert and Kathlin DarstKathlin disappeared by winter in the evening of 1982. According to her husband, he threw her in a car to a train to New York. Since then, no one else has seen her. The investigation found no reason to blame Darst. But relatives Katlin were sure that Darst killed his wife, and the corpse was reliably hidden. Everyone knew that at that time he had an affair with Pruens Farrow, the younger sister of Mia Farrow and the addressee of the song “Beatles” “ Dear Prudence " .
The second murder associated with the name of Darst happened in 2000. A friend of Robert, writer Susan Berman, was found killed in her house in Beverly Hills. Someone (apparently, acquaintance) shot her point -blank and calmly left, leaving no traces. Shortly before this, the prosecutor’s office reduced the case of 18 years ago about the disappearance of Kathleen Darst, and Robert Darst again became the main suspect, and Susan Berman was going to interrogate as a valuable witness.
A few days after the murder to Susan, an envelope came, inscribed by printed letters with an error: “ Beverley Hills " . Inside there was a note with the only word, also in print letters: “ Cadaver ” . The police could not prove Darst's involvement in the murder.
Six months later, the devilry began completely. From the waters of the Galveston Bay, next to the Texus town of the same name, plastic garbage bags containing parts of the human body began to emerge. They belonged to the lonely 71-year-old pensioner Maurice Black. Suspicion fell on his deaf neighbor, renting a launched apartment with a floor above.
Robert's younger brother, Douglas, complained that he had an unpleasant habit of secretly urinating in his Douglas, an office basket for papers.
The neighbor disappeared simultaneously with Black, but she was soon found and arrested. Upon closer examination, she turned out to be Robert Darst. It was he who hid in Galveston in the image of a deaf -mute aunt. In Darst’s car, they found a saw that was sawn the corpse of Maurice Black. He was arrested, but quickly released on a big bail. Darst immediately escaped. After a couple of weeks, he was arrested again - while trying to steal a six -dollar sandwich from a supermarket. With him, they found 35 thousand dollars in cash and a little marijuana. He was taken to prison, and soon he appeared before the jury on charges of the murder of Maurice Black.
The defendant did not deny that, under the web of a deaf -mute woman, he rented a cheap apartment in Galveston that Maurice Black was killed from his pistol and that he drank a corpse for three days, put the units into black garbage bags, and then threw them into the bay, not assuming that they could come up.
The head of the murdered never surfaced - or Darst did not drown her, but hid her reliably. But it was precisely a shot in the head that Maurice Black was killed. Without a head, the examination could not refute his assertion that Black attacked him first, having stolen his own gun, and he accidentally shot during the brawl. And that Darst then methodically sawed the corpse into pieces for three days - so he was just very scared. Would you not get scared in his place? The jury unanimously acquitted Robert Darst. The prosecution had no evidence that this elderly uncle in the bench is lying. Darst received several months of prison for disrespectful attitude to the corpse, which, of course, was fair.
The creator of “The Jinx” Andrew Jrekes made a name for himself the documentary “ Captoring the Friedmans” , which was released in 2003. The film told about Arnold Friedman, who received a life sentence of absurd accusation of pedophilia. The prosecutors managed to convince the jury that, under the guise of a computer circle, he arranged monstrous sexual orgies in his basement and raped more than eighty children.
Friedmans, father and three of his sons, loved to shoot each other on the video. In the hands of the Jrekes were hundreds of hours of priceless video material - the story of the Friedmans, documented by themselves. Something like an “invitation to execution”, shot by a trembling camera of Cincinnat Ts. The name of the picture, “ Captoring The FriedMans , can be translated in different ways-“we catch the Friedmanov”, “Plant the Friedmanov” and at the same time “remove the Friedmanov”. After her, Glory came to the Jrekes.
Everyone knew that at that time he had an affair with Pruens Farrow, the younger sister of Mia Farrow and the addressee of the song “Beatles” “Dear Prudence”.
Perhaps the first film of Jrekes about Robert Darst - art - was the first part of the grandiose plan to capture Darst? Suddenly Andrew Jrekes already then imagined himself Captain Ahav, who began the pursuit of his giant whale? Drama "All the best" (" All Good Things ”) , released in 2010, traced the fate of the protagonist from childhood to arrest. Robert Darst (his name is David Marx in the cinema) played Ryan Gosling. Having watched the film, Robert Darst called Andrew Jrekes.
At that time, Darst was almost 70. After the process of the murder of Black, almost seven years passed. The investigation in the case of Susan Berman somehow stalled. Father's Durst Organization paid him 65 million dollars - just to have nothing to have in common with him. So he lived comfortably, but, apparently, boring. And suddenly - a film with Gosling, where his whole story fit in the incomplete two hours of screen time.
Life, when it is almost lived, is a single -part film. But the life that you live is a series. It seems that there are still many episodes ahead, maybe not even one season. Darst wanted to continue the cinema. He offered Jrekes a series of interviews. It was clear both that they entered the game. In fact, the hero suggested that the director try to catch him - and the Jrekes accepted the challenge.
In 1988, the film "Thin Blue Line" (" The Thin Blue Line ”) produced something like a revolution in documentary cinema. This was a documentary investigation of the murder of a policeman, after which an innocently convicted person was released from prison - he waited for the death penalty. The justification became possible after the film. The story did not end with the final credits, but continued beyond the borders of the screen.
And in 2004 there was a "staircase" (" The Staircase ”) Jean Xavier de Lestrada - a documentary series about the trial of writer Michael Peterson accused of killing his wife. By the way, like Darst’s wife, she was called Katlin.
Finally, in 2014, the main mediacense in America was the detective audio poddy “Serial” (“ Serial ”) - a documentary investigation of the murder of a high school student, which happened 15 years ago in Baltimore, which was accused of her fellow practitioner.
These films are now usually remembered by analyzing the phenomenon of the “secrets of the billionaire”. Perhaps one of the main reasons for the success of “secrets” is in its serial nature. Jrekes had material on a solid two -hour documentary movie. He made six episodes and built the narrative so that the viewer was waiting for continuation all the time.
Darst kept in the cottage of the Siberian shepherd puppies - there were either six or seven of them, and everyone called Igor. All Igori disappeared without a trace, one by one.
Darst is very good here. These blinking eyes of a smart lizard, this strange high voice. "Did you deliberately shave off your eyebrows?" “How can you accidentally shake your eyebrows?” Or the scene of an acquittal - the puny darst standing between the two hefty Texas lawyers cannot believe his ears: "What, what did they say?" Then it comes to him, and his eyes light up with a triumph.
Even in the first, feature, film, Jrekes emphasized one strange feature of Darst - he constantly talks to himself. Why is not a familiar with his hero Jrekerei emphasized this detail? As if preparing - in the documentary series it becomes key. At some point, during a break in an interview, Darst is left alone and, not thinking that the microphone is turned on (or, conversely, thinking), repeats phrases from his interview, changing their meaning-funny and ominously at the same time.
In the fifth series of The Secrets of the Billionaire, Jrekerei blew up the first bomb. He found evidence that Darst really killed his friend Susan Berman. There was a letter in his hands, which once, long before the murder, Darst wrote Susan. The address is signed by the same printed letters and with the same error as in the commemorative note about the “cadre”.
After that, everyone spoke about the "secrets of the billionaire". The Jrekes managed to create the feeling that at the end it would happen that has not happened in the cinema so far.
In the sixth series, Darst was shown a letter. He continued to stubbornly deny the involvement in the murder of Susan. Then - and this, of course, will be included in all textbooks of the XXI century cinema (and not only cinema) - the main thing happens. The interview ends, the director comes out, the hero goes to the toilet, the camera remains to work in an empty room. Microphones are included, Darst knows about it. Or does not know. He begins to speak habitually with himself - and the microphone translates this sensational monologue from the toilet: “What the hell is I doing? He killed them all, of course. "
The next morning, the leading publications of the country wrote that the hero of the documentary television department for the first time in history admitted to the murder directly from the screen. As if it happened live. Then the questions began - and when exactly did the Jrekes removed these personnel? Perhaps a few years before the premiere? And how much Darst was aware of what he was doing? Did he play along with the director?
Robert Darst was arrested the day before the release of the last series “ Jinx ” containing this recognition. The case of the murder of Susan Berman was opened again - in connection with the emergence of new evidence. The prosecutor’s office categorically denies any connection between the series and the arrest of Darst. Darst himself categorically denies his guilt. Now he is located in the prison hospital of the New Orleans under a twenty -four -hour observation - in case of a possible attempt to suicide. Louisiana accuses him of illegal possession of weapons and drug storage, the California prosecutor’s office of the murder of Susan Berman. In addition, serious suspicions arose that in 1997 he killed another girl.
© Gawker.comAfter the final, the Jrekes and his producer Smerling gave several interviews, claiming that the decisive conversation with Darst occurred in 2013, but no one heard a monologue in the toilet until June 2014. Allegedly, the material was not completely loaded into the installation computer and the new assistant accidentally discovered it several months after shooting. Meanwhile, there is evidence that the record of the monologue was made in 2012. That is, having in hand the recognition of the protagonist, the creators of the series continued to shoot him without notifying the relevant authorities.
Is it so unknown. After the first interview in mid -March, Andrew, Jrekes and Mark Smerling ceased to communicate with the press, citing the fact that they actually moved to the rank of witnesses in the Robert Darst case .
But recently there were rumors that they communicate with the HBO channel - and probably discuss the second season of the “secrets of the billionaire” . What could this second season be about? We will find out soon. To be continued.
