The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine allowed the Cabinet of Ministers to introduce a moratorium on the payment of external debts to private creditors. It is reported by Ukrainian Pravda. The draft of the relevant law introduced to the Parliament by the Government of Ukraine was supported by 256 deputies.
During the discussion of the document, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that the Cabinet of Ministers is ready to pay debts, "but under the conditions that Ukraine offers." He explained that we are talking about restructuring the debts of the state.
The law allows to terminate the payment of external loan bonds and loans of state -owned enterprises. Some of these loans are still at Viktor Yushchenko’s presidency, but the bulk of the debts was made when the post of head of state was occupied by Viktor Yanukovych.
“Yanukovych managed to take $ 40 billion in three years in three years,” Yatsenyuk remarked. Only in the coming four years, he continued, Ukraine will have to return 30 billion dollars to external creditors. “From the pockets of the Ukrainians,” the prime minister concluded, “we cannot pay these debts.”
“Help not in a word, but a dollar, or rather a billion,” the head of government added, referring to foreign creditors.
According to the amendments made during the consideration of the document in the Rada, it is valid only until July 1, 2016.
