“I’m not sitting as a deputy now, but it would be nice if polygamy were legalized. But just so that everything is in accordance with Sharia: if a man can support another wife, then why not? This is common, which means it would be nice to somehow regulate it,” he said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru .

The head of the Synodal Department for Relations between Church and Society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, also spoke out about polygamy and the high-profile marriage of the head of the Chechen police department. In his opinion, the discussion about the wedding is an “information attack on Chechnya” and it was organized by groups that “would like to destroy the traditional family as a phenomenon,” Interfax reports. The archpriest also noted that the Russian Empire did not prevent polygamy among Muslims.

Earlier, the State Duma proposed introducing punishment for polygamy. The issue of punishment for polygamy will be discussed by parliamentarians on Tuesday.
