Russia's assertion that US authorities are trying to extend American jurisdiction to other countries is incorrect, a State Department spokesman said. Earlier, Vladimir Putin said that this was evidenced by the FIFA case

The Russian assertion that the FIFA corruption case indicates an attempt to extend American jurisdiction to other countries is not true, State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said.

"This is not true. We have not done and are not doing anything like that, this is completely clear,” Rathke responded to the journalist’s request to comment on the Russian President’s statements about the US role in the FIFA corruption scandal. According to the American diplomat, the United States is not trying to interfere with FIFA's internal procedures. “I would like to say that the assumptions that we are allegedly trying to influence internal processes in FIFA are incorrect,” he concluded.

Earlier on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin called the arrests of FIFA officials an attempt by the United States to “extend its jurisdiction to other states.”

“This is another clear attempt to extend its jurisdiction to other states,” the president said. “And certainly, I have no doubt about it, this is a clear attempt to prevent the re-election of Mr. [Joseph] Blatter as FIFA President, which is a gross violation of the principle of functioning of international organizations” (quote from TASS ).

Putin stressed that Blatter was under pressure when FIFA voted to grant Russia the right to host the 2018 World Cup. “As we know, the FIFA presidential elections were to take place on Friday, and Mr. Blatter has every chance of being re-elected,” the president explained.

On Wednesday, seven FIFA officials were detained in Switzerland at the request of the United States. This happened two days before the next elections for the head of the federation. Blatter was expected to serve a fifth term. Blatter himself supported the anti-corruption investigation and said that FIFA would assist the investigation.

The US Department of Justice has charged the detained FIFA officials with accepting and giving bribes, extortion, fraud and money laundering. The high-profile corruption case currently involves 14 people, including nine representatives of the federation. US Attorney General Lorette Lynch has made further arrests in the case.
