Medvedev called Saakashvili's appointment a "tent show"
Petro Poroshenko appointed Mikheil Saakashvili as governor on May 30. In addition, he granted him Ukrainian citizenship.
Mikheil Saakashvili was President of Georgia from 2004-2007 and 2008-2013. In 2008, when Dmitry Medvedev was president of Russia, the Russian Federation had a military conflict with Georgia over South Ossetia. Russian troops entered Georgia for several days. Following the conflict, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Most countries in the world consider them part of Georgia.
