Egypt removes Hamas from list of terrorist organizations

An appeals court in Egypt overturned a ruling designating the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Egypt designated Hamas as a terrorist organization in February 2015. The reason for the annulment of the decision was the ruling of the appellate court that the lower court acted outside its jurisdiction.

• The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas was founded in 1987. Since 2007, he has been in power in the Gaza Strip.
• Hamas has long been considered an ally of the Muslim Brotherhood, with the support of which Muhammad Morsi came to power in Egypt in 2012. In 2013, he was overthrown in a military coup.
• In December 2014, the European Court of General Jurisdiction demanded that Hamas be excluded from the list of terrorist organizations. The court considered that the EU did not have enough grounds to consider the organization a terrorist organization.
