Greece is on the verge of default, it may not have enough time to agree with creditors on a new agreement to pay debts to the International Monetary Fund, CNN reports.
According to the television company, the Greece leadership has time until Thursday June 18 to come to an agreement with creditors in exchange for a new financing program. Otherwise, the country faces default and departure from the eurozone.
Until the end of June, Greece should repay 1.54 billion euros to the International Monetary Fund, however, to pay off the debt to the IMF, the country needs the last tranche of financial assistance from creditors, which it cannot receive due to refusal to carry out reforms within the framework of the old financial assistance program.
The Eurozone countries have taken an emergency plan for the next failure of negotiations between the Greek government with international creditors, writes Suddeutsche Zeitung with reference to sources in Berlin and Brussels. If at a meeting of representatives of the Eurogroup with Athens on June 17 and 18 it will not be possible to agree on June 17 and 18, on Friday, June 19, an extraordinary summit of the heads of state and governments of the Eurozone countries will be convened, at which an attempt will be made to find a political solution to the problem.
The plan agreed by European partners also provides for the introduction of control of the Greek side calculation system with other European countries. It will help prevent mass deregistration of funds from Greek banks and the outflow of currency abroad. For these purposes, it is planned to close all financial and credit institutions of Greece for several days. And after their opening, limit the withdrawal of cash at ATMs within the country. In addition, electronic money transfers within the country will be limited, and behind its limits - blocked.
The leaders of the eurozone countries see three possible solutions to the problem of Greek debts. This is the conclusion of a financial assistance transaction in exchange for reforms, but experts consider this scenario for the development of the situation the least probable. An alternative may be the extension of the financial assistance program, which ends on June 30. And finally, the third option is default.
Earlier, Greece Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that the creditors regard the sincere desire of Athens to find the solution to the problem of state debt as weakness and therefore insist on reducing pensions and salaries. However, Greece is ready to patiently wait until the creditors return to realism, Tsipras said.
On the eve of Greece, an absolute record was set to withdraw cash from bank accounts. According to the Greek electronic portal Reporter, at the time of the closure of banks, about 600 million euros were removed from the accounts. This is 2.5 times higher than Friday. The actions of depositors are explained by the failure of the negotiations of the Greek government with creditors.
