The Kremlin considers it short-sighted to discuss possible financial assistance to Greece from Moscow until Athens has made a request for it, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

“To consider such an issue, we must first hear some proposals or some initiatives from our Greek partners,” the Interfax agency quotes his words spoken before Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in St. Petersburg within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2015).

“To argue abstractly without any appeals or proposals is short-sighted,” explained Putin’s press secretary.

Earlier on Friday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich assured in an interview with RT that Moscow will support in every possible way the resolution of the Greek financial crisis. “If financial support is required, we will consider this issue,” the TASS agency quotes him as saying .

The day before, on Thursday, Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Storchak said that Greece did not apply to the Russian Ministry of Finance for financial assistance.

Currently, Athens is conducting intense negotiations with international creditors on the settlement of the Greek debt of €240 billion. On Monday, an emergency summit of eurozone leaders will be held in Brussels to discuss the situation with Greece.

The EU assistance program for Greece ends at the end of June 2015.

Greek depositors withdrew more than €1 billion from banks on Thursday, Reuters reported, citing three banking sources. According to one of the agency's interlocutors, there is no panic and no queues at banks. “This is a calm and gradual phase of withdrawing money. This is due to doubts about whether a deal will be concluded with the country's creditors,” he said.

The volume of funds withdrawn from Greek banks from Monday to Thursday reached €3 billion, which represents about 2.2% of corporate and individual deposits in Greek banks at the end of April.
