The program of Kyiv Biennale was announced

The curators of the Biennale of Contemporary Art “Kiev School” Georg Schelhammer and Hedvig Zakenhuber called its main platforms and topics of six schools - educational projects that will be open to all for two months of Biennale.

The main platform of Biennale will be the house of clothing on Lviv Square in Kyiv. According to Ukrainian Pravda , the location of the main Biennale project in this space, according to curators, indicates the huge potential of Kiev for the development of artistic infrastructure. In addition, the attraction of this location for the Biennale exhibition project is a kind of tribute to the architecture of Soviet modernism, which has been explored by the curators of the Kyiv School for many years.

The Biennale exhibition and educational programs will be carried out in collaboration with the House of Cinema, the artist’s house, the state scientific architectural and construction library named after V.G. Zabolotny, Institute of Problems of Contemporary Art, Kyiv City Art Gallery "Lavra", National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, National Museum of History of Ukraine, National University "Kiev-Mogilyansk Academy", National Art Museum of Ukraine, National Center. Alexandra Dovzhenko, art workshops on Soshenko, 33 and Gallery 32 Vozdvizhenka Arts House .

The program of six Biennale schools unites artists, intellectuals, activists and students who will be able to cooperate with their colleagues and the public.

The “School of Tolerated Europe” is a series of lectures, seminars and discussions with the participation of Ukrainian and international theorists, historians, activists and artists, raises the question of the possibility of the rest of Europe in the context of the Ukrainian and pan -European crisis.

Among the participants of Emily Vordill (Great Britain) are an artist, professor of the Central College of Art and Design named after St. Martin, Ivan Krastev (Bulgaria) - political scientist, director of the Center for Liberal Strategies, Shalini Physredia (Austria) - rector of the Institute of Humanities; Joshua Simon (Israel) is the curator of the museum complex of the city of Bat-Yam, as well as Professor Yale University Timothy Sneder and Marsi Shor (USA).

The “School of Image and Evidence” will focus on film production as an instrument of critical analysis of war in Ukraine. Researchers, media activists and directors will work on a series of documentary video works in cooperation with Ukrainian and foreign filmmakers.

Among the participants is Natalya Gumenyuk (Ukraine)-a journalist, co-founder of the public television channel, Arthur Zhmievsky (Poland)-artist, director, curator of the 7th Berlin Biennale; Sergey Loznitsa (Ukraine-Germania) is a director of documentary and feature cinema, Chaim Sokol (Russia)-Video artist, Hito Steirl (Germany)-director, writer, professor of Berlin University of Arts.

The “School of displaced persons” is a network that will collect forced immigrants and public initiatives from different countries, as well as artists who became immigrants for political reasons.

Among the participants of the Rami Essam (Egypt-Shweetia) is a musician, “Voice of Tahrir Square” during the 2011 revolution in Egypt, Helgi Lund (Norway) is the director of the international network of cities of the ICORN , refugee writers; Ahmet Flaxes (Turkey)-artist, representative of Turkey on the 53rd Venetian Biennale, Militsa Tomich (Serbia)-artist, co-founder of the Grupa Spomenik team, adelita Khusni-Bey (Libya-Libaly)-artist, researcher.

The School of Loneliness will present performative and research works related to the feeling of post -revolutionary losses and disappointments. The school unites artists and activists who participated in protests in Ukraine, Arab countries, Hong Kong, South America and Russia.

Among the participants of Taus Makhachev (Russia) - artist, finalist of the Kandinsky Prize, Marina Poprushkina (Belarus) - artist, founder of the project “Counterpropaganda Management”; Boris Ondreichka (Slovakia) - artist, curator of the initiative Tranzit.sk , Zeyno Beiunlu (Turkey) - artist, teacher of the University of Kültür in Istanbul.

In the "School of Landscape" , artists and geographers, poets and political scientists, historians and economists will present a variety of interpretations of the landscape of Ukraine in different historical periods. The school will also demonstrate the works of contemporary artists from different countries, and study the cultural and political significance of the landscape.

Among the participants of Ank Bener and Arnold Estephan (Romania) are an art collective, Tatyana Zhurzhenko (Austria) - researcher, employee of the Institute of Humanities, Martin Pollak (Austria) - writer, historian; Andreas Zikman (Germany) - artist, researcher, Vladislav Shapovalov (Russia) - artist, member of the Radek group.

The “School of Realism” will unite representatives of various artistic areas for a joint discussion about the new relevance of realism in the theory and practice of art.

Among the participants Dmitry Gutov (Russia) is an artist; Goran Georgevich (Serbia) - artist; Dag Eshford (USA) is an artist, a participant in the Group Material team, John Miller and Aura Rosenberg (CC) - artists, curators.

The Biennale of Modern Art "Kiev School" will be held from September 8 to November 1, 2015.

Earlier, the National Cultural, Art and Museum Complex "Mystetsky Arsenal" announced the abolition of Biennale due to the situation in the country, but despite this, the curators decided to conduct it. “According to the situation in Ukraine - after the revolution on the Maidan and during the war in the east of the country - the political potential of art is more relevant than ever,” they said.
