Russia paid Navalny and Yashin 26 thousand euros each for detention at a rally

The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation paid oppositionists Alexei Navalny and Ilya Yashin 26,000 euros each for illegal detention at a rally in 2011.

“Payment of the amounts of compensation awarded by the European Court of Human Rights was made in accordance with the established procedure,” the ministry said.

• In December 2014, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of Navalny and Yashin. According to the court decision, the Russian authorities violated Navalny and Yashin's right to freedom of assembly, a fair trial, the right to liberty and security of person, and protection at trial. In addition, the court concluded that the detainees were subjected to torture - this is how the ECHR assessed the conditions of detention in the Russian detention center.
• Navalny and Yashin were detained on December 5, 2011 at the first rally against massive fraud in the elections to the State Duma, which took place the day before. Several thousand people came to the action at Chistye Prudy. After the rally, many decided to organize a procession, which was stopped by the police. As a result, three hundred people were detained, including Navalny and Yashin, who were sentenced to 15 days of arrest.
