Sochi flood damage nearly $14 million
Heavy flooding in Sochi has affected 1.9 thousand residential buildings, home to over 4,000 people. The natural disaster's total cost comes to 760 million rubles ($13.7 million), including an estimated 350 million rubles ($6.3 million) in damages to private housing, according to city officials.
Early on Monday, June 29, floodwaters had receded entirely from homes in Sochi's Adlerski and Khostinski regions, according to emergency workers.
"Residents of 1,500 Sochi homes will receive compensation from 10,000 to 100,000 rubles ($180 to $1,800.)"
- The flood in Sochi began on June 25 after heavy rains. Three month's worth of rain fell within several hours, according to one report, causing eight rivers to spill their banks. Residents of the worst-hit regions were evacuated. Among the damaged buildings are the airport and the Adler railway station, built for the 2014 winter Olympics.
