The state is attractive because the state owns everything
For the modern world with its mobility, openness and variety of opportunities, of course, it is strange to dream of the position of an average official, the work of a patrol officer. Yes, even the prospect of becoming a clerk in a huge state corporation should not wake up special delight in young minds.
Quite another matter is reality. And the reality is all about the fact that in Russia money - small, large, medium, in general, any - they are from the state and from the state. Everything that is not from the state is very doubtful and unreliable.
Who wants to work for a modern young man from an average provincial town, if the salary of a policeman (namely, salary, without taking into account other opportunities for generating income) is 1.5-2 times higher than the average salary in any other place? So, in the picture of the world of a modern young man, a successful businessman is the son, matchmaker or brother of the same official, an employee of a state corporation or a policeman. And this picture is much more adequate to reality than exhibition postcards from Russian variations of Hopes & Fears.
State money, state salary, and as an ideal - the ability to steal - for many today the only way is not even to success, but to a normal stable life in Russia.
In Moscow, everything is a little different, but if you ask a Moscow girl from a residential area which suitor looks the most promising, the answer will not surprise you: a FSB officer and a policeman, as an option - a dude from the gas and oil and gas defense business. Successful businessmen, financial analysts and other representatives of modern independent professions are a distant and extremely small bohemia. And the rest of the joiners and carpenters are very much inferior to the representatives of backbone professions in terms of prospects.
And no special Russian patriotism has anything to do with it. Rather, on the contrary, it is a natural consequence of the economic system, where all the money belongs to the state and from the state. People tied and locked within the state and working for it are forced to adapt to an abnormal situation. Identify yourself with the interests of specific people and structures of this state. In any case, as long as they pay money and provide at least the illusion of possibilities.
