The Kremlin has revealed details of a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

According to the assistant to the head of state, Yuri Ushakov, “a general conversation took place.” “Tsipras informed about the situation in Greece and that contacts with European creditors continue. On our part, support was expressed for the efforts of Greek society to overcome the crisis situation,” Ushakov told reporters at a briefing.

Earlier, sources from Reuters and Bloomberg reported that Tsipras was going to hold telephone conversations with Putin. The information was later confirmed by the Kremlin. Thus, the conversation with the Russian president is Tsipras’s first negotiations with the leader of a foreign state after summing up the results of the referendum.

The Kremlin clarified that the negotiations took place on the initiative of the Greek side. Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the results of the referendum in Greece, said that the Kremlin respects its results.

The day before, a referendum was held in Greece, in which the population had to decide whether to support the demands of European creditors. As a result, most of the voting participants were against it.

Last week Greece was supposed to pay €1.6 billion to the International Monetary Fund. Lack of payment, which was eventually confirmed by the IMF, is equivalent to default.
