The IT giant plans to lay off 2,300 employees in Finland

Microsoft plans to lay off 2,300 employees in Finland. According to Yle , Microsoft's activities in southern Finland will be completely stopped. Worldwide, the company plans to cut 7,800 jobs.

The reductions will most affect the mobile division, which was purchased by the company from Nokia in April 2014. Microsoft plans to cut costs in this division by 7.6 billion euros.

After 30 thousand Nokia employees joined the ranks of Microsoft, the total number of employees of the corporation reached 127 thousand 104 people. But in October last year, about 18 thousand employees left Microsoft. The reduction was the largest in the entire history of the company - it affected 14% of the staff.

In 2009, Microsoft already resorted to mass layoffs - then 5,800 employees left the company. As noted in the Microsoft release, a significant part of the reductions - 12,500 positions - occurred due to the merger with the parent company Nokia Devices and Services. Then the management of the IT giant promised to introduce a savings regime (it should reduce costs by $600 million per year) 18 months after the deal is closed. The cuts were planned in those areas where the activities of the two companies overlap, RBC previously wrote , citing its sources.

Nokia held the title of the world's largest mobile phone supplier since 1998 until it was lost to Korea's Samsung in 2012. After that, Nokia's mobile business steadily lost market share and remained in the red until the deal with Microsoft. Nokia's current business is 90% made up of sales of equipment for wireless networks.
