The situation with fish hatcheries in the Magadan region “does not cause optimism,” the head of the region, Vladimir Pecheny, said at a meeting with representatives of the federal industry expert commission. As the press service of the regional administration reported, representatives of the Federal Fisheries Agency, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "National Fish Resources", and the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Central Department for Fisheries Expertise and Standards for the Conservation, Reproduction of Aquatic Biological Resources and Acclimatization" arrived in the region to assess the situation at fish hatcheries.

According to Mr. Pecheny, the salmon population has decreased significantly, which has led to the departure of some fishing companies with fishing quotas to other regions of the Far East. There are four fish hatcheries in the region, all of which have federal funding. Three are functioning. The Olsky plant is in a “frozen” state; no reconstruction has been carried out in the 32 years of its existence. According to Konstantin Bandurin, a representative of the Department of Science and Education of the Federal Fisheries Agency, at least 200 million rubles are required to bring the plant to full operating capacity. “We considered transferring it to the jurisdiction of the MagadanNIRO Federal State Budgetary Institution as one of the options for preserving and reconstructing the plant. However, now funding for the work of this institution has been reduced, so a simple transfer will not solve anything,” said Konstantin Bandurin.

According to the head of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Okhotskrybvod, Yuri Chekaldin, all factories operate under targeted subsidies; only current repairs and putting equipment in order are financed. No money was ever received for major repairs.

“I believe that fish hatcheries in the Magadan region must be preserved as one of the foundations of the fishing industry. If necessary, we will raise the issue of funding at the federal level and meet with the president. But this must be preceded by careful preparatory analytical work,” said Vladimir Pecheny.
