The majority of members of the Central Committee of Greece's ruling Syriza party rejected the proposed reform plan implied by the agreement that was reached between the government and international creditors. This is stated in a statement by the committee published on the Facebook page of one of its members, Stathis Kouvelakis. 109 out of 201 committee members voted against.

Committee members refer to the fact that the country's population previously voted against cooperation with creditors in a referendum. The agreement is incompatible with the principles of the left party and the interests of the working classes, the statement said. Committee members called on Parliament to maintain party unity and support the abandonment of the proposed reform plan.

Greek Parliament Speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou of Syriza also called on MPs to vote against the bill on reforms needed to reach an agreement with creditors. This is reported by DPA. According to the agency, the speaker believes that this bill should not add to the blackmail of the country.

On Wednesday, July 15, the Greek Parliament began discussing the reform package proposed by the government.

Earlier in Greece, a 24-hour strike was announced for public sector employees, municipal employees, doctors and teachers. They oppose reforms.

The Greek Ministry of Finance submitted a corresponding bill to parliament the day before. It contains provisions regarding financial measures and social security. In particular, it involves increasing some VAT rates and pension reform.

Greece agreed to creditors' demands for such reforms in exchange for the resumption of the bailout program.
