“In our message about the telephone conversation, we said everything that we considered necessary to say about the results of this telephone conversation,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday. This is how he commented on Obama’s interview with The New York Times, which was published the day before, TASS reports .

In an interview with an American newspaper, Obama said that he was “encouraged” by the call from the Russian president, who began the conversation with Syria. “I think they [Russian authorities] understand that the Assad regime is losing control over more and more of the territory of Syria, and the takeover of power by Sunni jihadists or the flight of the Syrian regime is not inevitable, but it is becoming a greater and greater threat every day,” he said Obama. He noted that this gives Washington the opportunity to enter into a serious dialogue with the Russian authorities.

A telephone conversation between Putin and Obama took place on June 26. Commenting on the conversation between the leaders of the United States and Russia that day, Peskov said that they paid special attention to the fight against terrorism.

“Considerable attention was paid to a range of issues related to the fight against terrorism, especially the spread of the influence of the Islamic State in the Middle East,” Peskov said, emphasizing that the parties agreed to instruct Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry to separately discuss this topic. In addition, according to Peskov, the issue of resolving the conflict in Ukraine was on the agenda.

Returning to the topic of negotiations between Obama and Putin on July 7, Peskov said that the position of the Russian President on resolving the conflict in Syria has not changed. “The Russian position is well known, and it was renewed by the [Russian] president during this conversation,” he told TASS .
