The dismantling of Soviet sculptures is completed in Vilnius

On Monday night, July 20, the latest sculptural compositions of the Soviet era are dismantled in Vilnius. Instead of them, flowers are installed in flowerpots.

According to Radio Liberty , we are talking about the figures of soldiers, workers, peasants and students standing on the Green Bridge. According to the city authorities, four figures came into a dilapidated state and were removed for security reasons.

The statues will not return to the bridge. “I am not going to spend public money on repairing and returning these sculptures to its former place,” said Mayor Vilnius Remigiyus Shimashus. He considers the heroization of Soviet people a lie, and dismantled sculptures - a mockery of real people who lived in Soviet times.

Now, on the site of sculptures on the Green Bridge, flowers in large flowerpots are installed, the further fate of the statues will be decided in the fall. Unofficial proposals about the placement of statues have already received from three parks located nearby, Interfax reports. According to the director of the Department of Urban Economy and Transport of Virginia Pauzhi, the sculptures did not get damage during dismantling.

The statues on the Green Bridge were installed in 1952NBSP; the year and remained the last monuments in Vilnius, reminiscent of the Soviet past of Lithuania. In 1991, a monument to Lenin was demolished in the capital of the country, then a monument to General Chernyakhovsky was dismantled and transported to Voronezh.
