The fate of the ex-official's case is being decided in Krasnodar courts

As Kommersant learned, a scandal erupted in the Krasnodar region around an investigation launched by the Investigative Committee against the former vice-governor of the region, Evgeny Muravyov. According to investigators, while being the deputy head of the region, Mr. Muravyov several years ago received a reward from one of the local entrepreneurs for assistance in the implementation of an investment project. The Oktyabrsky District Court of Krasnodar declared the initiation of the case illegal, and now the prosecutor's office is trying to get this decision overturned by the appellate instance of the regional court.

The appeal board of the Krasnodar Regional Court has scheduled for July 28 the consideration of the prosecutor's office's submission against the decision of the Oktyabrsky District Court of Krasnodar, which on July 4 declared illegal the actions of the investigator of the regional department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in initiating a criminal case against Evgeny Muravyov. The prosecutor's office does not agree with this decision and insists on resuming the investigation. A criminal case was initiated by the department for the investigation of particularly important cases of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for the Krasnodar Territory under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud).

Evgeny Muravyov served as deputy head of the region from 2005 to 2009, and his area of responsibility included issues of economic development and investment. According to Kommersant, the episode charged by investigators with the ex-official dates back precisely to this period. The investigation believes that seven years ago, local businessman Levitsky turned to Evgeny Muravyov for assistance in implementing an investment project. As a reward, the businessman, according to law enforcement agencies, gave an apartment in Gelendzhik to Evgeniy Muravyov’s relative, but the official, according to the prosecution, did not fulfill his promises. Evgeniy Muravyov does not admit his guilt. The suspect's lawyer, Konstantin Shulgin, declined to comment.

Evgeny Muravyov resigned from the post of vice-governor in January 2009, then was appointed general director of Krayinvestbank OJSC. Since May 2009, he became the General Director of OJSC Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company. In November 2013, Mr. Muravyov returned to Krasnodar and became president of the Development-Yug corporation, and since August 2014 he has served as general director of the Kuban football club. On July 9, 2015, the club management announced the resignation of Evgeny Muravyov. The former vice-governor participated in the United Russia internal party vote for elections to the Krasnodar City Duma, but the lists of candidates from United Russia have not yet been published
