Russia will ban the import of canned fish from four Latvian factories

From August 1, Rospotrebnadzor introduces a ban on the import into Russia of canned fish produced at four factories in Latvia: products from these enterprises are withdrawn from circulation, Anna Sergeeva, assistant to the head of the department, told Novaya Gazeta. According to Sergeeva, the names of the enterprises will be published on July 28.

This decision was made based on the results of a sanitary check: the department’s employees found a number of violations in Latvian canned food, in particular, inconsistencies in labeling, a violation of the content of the main mass of the product and energy value indicators. Rospotrebnadzor continues to check and does not exclude that the restrictions will affect other manufacturers.

Didzis Šmits, president of the Latvian Fish Processing Union, told Novaya Gazeta that no official papers had yet been received from Rospotrebnadzor.

In May, agency officials inspected several fish processing plants in Latvia and Estonia and expressed concern over the identified “systemic” violations. The Baltic manufacturers responded by saying that their products meet European standards.

The director of one of the largest Latvian fish processing enterprises Brivais vilnis Arnold Babris, in a conversation with Novaya, expressed the hope that the temporary ban of Rosselkhoznadzor could be lifted in the near future.

“A list of violations has been drawn up, we will come up with proposals for their elimination,” Babris said. According to him, this should happen in September.
