Russia is ready to block the UN Security Council resolution on the Boeing tribunal

At a meeting of the UN Security Council, Russia will vote against a draft resolution on the establishment of a tribunal for the downed over Ukraine "Boeing" MH-17, said Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin, quoted by RIA Novosti . If necessary, this will be followed by a veto, Churkin promised.

“We will vote against, I have no doubts about that. If the resolution gets nine or more votes, it will be a veto < Russia will use the right of veto - Ed. >. If it gets less than nine votes, then it will simply be a negative vote by Russia along with some other members of the Security Council. Unfortunately, I think that nine votes are likely to be typed, ”Churkin said.

The permanent representative admitted that the Russian side hopes that the draft on the tribunal, presented by Malaysia, will not be put to a vote at all, because it is not clear "what and how will benefit from this." Churkin also stressed that Russia's arguments on this issue are "extremely convincing."

The UN Security Council will consider a Boeing tribunal on July 29. A number of countries are pushing for a tribunal, including Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Ukraine, Malaysia and Australia. The day before, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced her intention to achieve the support of all members of the UN Security Council on the establishment of a tribunal. In turn, Russia is categorically opposed, declaring the need to wait for the results of the investigation.

According to the procedure of the Security Council, resolutions are considered adopted when they are voted by nine members of the Council. By exercising the right of veto, a member of the organization can block a decision taken by the council.

Malaysia submitted its draft resolution on the establishment of a Boeing tribunal on 14 July. The country assesses the downed plane as a "threat to international security."
