Booker Prize longlist announced
The organizing committee for The Man Booker Prize has unveiled the long list of nominees for the 2015 award.
The list includes 13 works by authors from the UK, USA, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Nigeria and Jamaica.
Among the contenders for the award is the Irish author Anne Enright, who received the Booker in 2007 for her novel The Gathering. The long list also includes novels by American writer Marilyn Robinson and British authors Tom McCarthy and Andrew O'Hagen, whose works have previously been shortlisted for The Man Booker Prize.
Other nominees for the award include Jamaican native Marlon James with A Brief History of Seven Murders. James became the first Jamaican in Booker history to be on the long list of contenders for the award.
In total, the jury chose from 156 works published in English over the past year.
"The long list should have been twice as long, but we're more than happy with our final selection," said Booker jury chairman Michael Wood.
- The 2015 Booker Prize shortlist will be announced on September 15th. The short list will include six novels. The name of the winner of the award and the £50,000 check will be announced on October 13 at a ceremony in London. Authors whose books are shortlisted for the award will receive checks for £2,500 and the right to republish their novels in a special "Booker" design.
- The Booker Prize is one of the most prestigious in English-language literature. Until 2013, the award was only given to novels by authors living in the British Commonwealth, Ireland or Zimbabwe. Then the rules were changed and Booker was allowed to submit works in English by authors from other countries of the world, including the United States.
