The deputy chairman of the Mejlis has had his detention period extended

Yesterday, on July 28, the Kievsky District Court of Simferopol, having considered the petition of the investigator of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to extend the term of arrest for the deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Akhtem Chiygoz, decided to leave Chiygoz in custody for three months and 21 days, that is, until November 19, 2015. This was reported on the Facebook page of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people .

According to relatives, friends and colleagues who came to the court session to support Akhtem Chiygoz, he looks pale, thinner, but cheerful. Chiygoz did not complain about the conditions of detention. According to the lawyer, today, while waiting to be transported to court, Akhtem Chiygoz was deprived of the opportunity to have breakfast, lunch and wash.

“Today we once again became convinced of the political motivation of the arrest of Akhtem Chiygoz. The representative of the prosecutor's office once again allowed himself to neglect the presumption of innocence at the trial and talk about the proof of Chiygoz's guilt, although there has not yet been a trial on the merits of the case,” said First Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Nariman Dzhelal. “One of the arguments of the investigation regarding the extension of the arrest of Akhtem Chiygoz is his constant contacts with the leaders of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev and Refat Chubarov, which is not an outright policy, the desire to stop these contacts by isolating one of the influential Crimean Tatar politicians.”

“Today, one cannot hope that the court will be objective when it comes to a political order,” Akhtem Chiygoz said at the court session.

Akhtem Chiygoz was detained on January 29 this year as part of a criminal investigation on charges of organizing mass riots on February 26, 2014 near the building of the Crimean Parliament.
