“Committee against Torture” fined for distributing leaflets without the “foreign agent” tag

The magistrate of court district No. 2 of the Nizhny Novgorod judicial district fined the Committee Against Torture, which has now been liquidated, 300,000 rubles. The reason for the decision was a picket organized by the "Committee against Torture" in Nizhny Novgorod on June 26. The court considered that the leaflets “Prosecutor, remember your oath” handed out at the picket, as well as the posters and banners used at the event, should have had notes that these information and campaign materials were published or distributed by a “non-profit organization performing the functions of a foreign agent”, reports “Kasparov. Ru".

The head of the “Committee against Torture”, Igor Kalyapin, speaking in court, said: “Any decision on a fine will be meaningless, since the checkpoint has ceased its activities and has neither property nor financial resources that could be used to pay the fine. Thus, any decision of the court to impose a fine will obviously be unenforceable.”

The "Committee against Torture" was included in the list of "foreign agents" in January 2015. In July, after unsuccessful attempts to challenge the decision, the organization announced its liquidation.
