Try to tear me off a veto

The proposals of France and Great Britain on the voluntary refusal to apply the veto law for permanent UN Security Council in the case when it comes to mass crimes, have no serious prospects. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, TASS reports .

“As for the ideas about the restriction or cancellation of the veto’s right to the UN Security Council, they do not sound for the first time,” he said. “They have no serious prospects. The veto’s right is enshrined without any conditions in the UN Charter, and everyone who ratified it,” Lavrov said.

“We are worried about the activated attempts to provoke confrontation in the Security Council by throwing out unilateral resolutions, whether in a cut or according to the Malaysian Boeing,” the minister said. “This is no longer diplomacy, but the desire to make the UN Council of Ministers with an instrument of propaganda, if we call a spade a spade.”

In 2013, with a proposal, to voluntarily limit the application of veto's right in cases where urgent measures are required to suppress mass crimes, French President Francois Hollande spoke. On Tuesday, the constant representative of Great Britain at the UN Matthew Ryruct supported this initiative.

"We support the principle on which the French initiative is based. We cannot imagine a situation in which the United Kingdom would take advantage of the right veto and blocked the adoption of measures in response to mass atrocities," Raiprote said.

In his opinion, the most important problem that the UN faced is a capacity crisis. “To date, there are too many challenges in the world, including conflicts in Syria, Ukraine, the Middle Eastern peace process, in respect of which the Security Council could not take actions due to internal disagreements. This has led to the continuation of the suffering of innocent people, as well as the fact that some people question the value of the work that the UN does,” the British diplomat noted.

Russia, possessing as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, regularly uses it. Over the past two years, Russia has blocked a number of Councils of Security Council on the situation in Ukraine. The last time Moscow applied the right of a veto on July 29 , when the issue of creating an international tribunal on the death of the Malaysian Boeing-777 in the Donbass was considered.
