ISIS militants killed the keeper of the monuments of Palmyra

The militants of the Islamic State (the activities of the group in Russia is prohibited by the court) killed the former keeper of the monuments of ancient architecture in the city of Palmir 82-year-old Haled Assad. It is reported by BBC News.

According to the head of the Syrian agency for the protection of monuments Mamun Abdulkarim, Assad was beheaded, and his body was posted by militants on one of the columns in the center of Palmyra.

Khaled Assad worked in Palmyra for more than 50 years. He resigned from the post of director of the antique heritage of Palmyra in 2003, but continued to cooperate with the museums of the city.

Palmyra is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. On the territory of the city there are a large number of monuments of the late antiquity period, when Palmyra was one of the largest and richest cities in the Middle East.

ISIS militants captured Palmyra in May 2015. While the monuments there were not destroyed, but information appeared that they were mined.
