An agency will appear in Ukraine for the search for property of corrupt officials

A special agency will appear in Ukraine for the search, return and management of assets obtained by corruption. It is reported by Ukrainian Truth .

The bill regulating the work of this structure was submitted by officials from the Ministry of Justice, the prosecutor's office and the Countering Center.

The agency, among other things, will evaluate the assets mentioned and their management during the investigation, during the court, as well as after a decision on confiscation. The arrested funds or income from the management of assets will be charged to the agency’s accounts or directly sent to the state budget. A quarter of this money will go to the special fund, which the agency will dispose of (they will go, in particular, to “reimbursing the costs of asset management”).

The prosecutor’s office emphasized that the creation of such a structure will “arrest assets in the early stages of the investigation and manage them before confiscation.” “We propose changes to the legislation that will untie the hands of law enforcement officers who cannot now arrest corruption assets before the person announcing suspicion and in cases where such assets are recorded on dummies,” said Vitaly Kasko, Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

In the event that in the future the court determines that the property was received in a legal way, the agency will return it to the owners.

At the end of 2014, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine said that in the framework of a pre -trial investigation of criminal cases against the overthrown President Viktor Yanukovych and his team, assets were arrested by $ 1.8 billion and 6.2 billion hryvnias (about $ 280 million at the current rate). Earlier, the prosecutor’s office claimed that the former president stole more than $ 100 billion from the state, crossing part of these funds to Russia.

The head of the Ukrainian government Arseniy Yatsenyuk, in turn, has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the arrested funds of Yanukovych’s environment are still not confiscated. Money, according to him, could be used for social needs.
