The keeper of the monuments was executed in Palmyra

The militants of the “Islamic state of Iraq and Levant” (ISIS, a terrorist organization prohibited in Russia) executed the keeper of the monuments of ancient Palmyra Khalid Asaad.

According to The Guardian , citing representatives of the Syrian government, the 82-year-old archaeologist was subjected to cruel torture, beheaded and hanged on the Roman column in the center of Palmyra, the preservation and restoration of the monuments of which he dedicated more than 50 years of his life.

The head of the Syrian Government Department for the Protection of Monuments, Maamun Abdulkamim, with reference to the family of Khalid Asaada, said that the militants interrogated the scientist for almost a month, unsuccessfully trying to receive information from him about the "treasures of Palmyra."

After the execution of Asaada, a photograph of his decapitated body was posted in social networks with the inscription that he had taken care of the safety of the “idols” and participated in the conferences of the “infidels”.

Palmyra was controlled by ISIS at the end of May of this year. On the territory of the ancient city, there are many structures belonging to the best samples of ancient Roman architecture and UNESCO recognized by UNESCO Monuments of World Heritage.

In June, ISIS militants blew up two Muslim tombs in Palmyra, in July theydestroyed several monuments of the pre -Islamic period there.
