The Ukrainian authorities will file a lawsuit against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in connection with the Russian court's sentencing of director Oleg Sentsov, Interfax reported on Wednesday, August 26, citing Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Yatsenyuk clarified that the subject of the appeal will be the violation of the right to justice of Ukrainian citizens in Russia. Kyiv plans to send the corresponding claim to the ECHR on August 26. Yatsenyuk added that Sentsov’s sentence is planned to be proposed for discussion by the UN Security Council.

“Our Western partners, permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council will raise the issue of the illegal conviction of Sentsov and other citizens of Ukraine in the UN Security Council, because Russia, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, constantly violates the UN Charter and international legal documents,” leads words of the Ukrainian Prime Minister Interfax.

The head of the Ukrainian government noted that he had already spoken on this topic with the Ambassador of New Zealand to Ukraine and Poland, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin, in turn, had telephone conversations with Western partners on this matter.

On August 25, the North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Sentsov to 20 years in a maximum security colony; the court found Sentsov guilty in the case of preparing terrorist attacks in Crimea. Previously, the prosecution demanded 23 years in prison for Sentsov. He pleaded not guilty, calling the case “political and fabricated.”

Sentsov was detained in Crimea on May 11, 2014. The investigation stated that the Ukrainian director formed a terrorist community in Crimea, whose members, after the annexation of Crimea to Russia, set fire to the offices of the public organization “Russian Community of Crimea” and the branch of “United Russia” in Simferopol.
