Ukraine will appeal to the ECHR over the Sentsov case

The Ukrainian government will send a lawsuit to the European Court of Human Rights about the violation of human rights, including those convicted by Oleg Sentsov and other citizens of Ukraine, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said at an expanded government meeting.

“I can’t help but react to yesterday’s inhumane decision of the so-called Russian ostentatious court, because this cannot be called a court, it is political reprisal against Ukrainians. This case will not go unnoticed not only by the international community, but also by the Ukrainian side. The Government of Ukraine has decided to file today the fourth claim to the European Court of Human Rights against the Russian Federation. This is a Ukrainian lawsuit against Russia, and part of this lawsuit is also a violation of the right to justice, namely the violation of the rights of Mr. Sentsov and other Ukrainian citizens who were illegally convicted by a Russian court. Ukraine demands that this lawsuit be accepted without delay and that the Russian Federation be held accountable for violating international law,” Yatsenyuk said.

The Prime Minister also asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin to inform after the end of the government meeting what norms of international law have been violated and what exactly Ukraine will require.
