
The speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko officially announced the cancellation of her visit to New York. Matvienko’s comment is published on the website of the upper house.
The head of the Council explained that she was going to New York to meet with the UN Secretary General Pan Hi Moon, as well as take part in the 4th World Conference of the speakers of the parliaments of the countries-members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which will be held on August 29-31, and in the 10th meeting of women-spikers. “However, the US State Department issued me an entry visa only to meet with the UN Secretary General, having prevented my participation in the speakers conference,” continued Matvienko.
“The decision of the US authorities is a gross violation of international law, its own obligations to the international community, question the feasibility of international events in the United States and is unacceptable for us,” the Speaker of the Council said. “I can’t accept such flawed visa conditions, therefore it is not possible to participate in the Russian delegation in the work of the World Word of the Speaker.”
